1 cave

it takes us back to the time when people lived in caves.
-definition-
a large natural hole in the side of a cliff or hole, or under the ground.

2 sonorous
-context-
As always with Kipling, the language is sonorous and wonderful.
-definition-
having a pleasantly deep loud sound.

3 befell
-context-
for this befell and behappened and became and was, O my best Beloved,
when the Tame animals were wild.
-definition-
if something unpleasant or dangerous befalls you, it happens to you.

4 roast
-context-
That night, Best Beloved, they ate wild sheep roasted on the hot stones,and flavoured
with wild garlic and wild pepper.
-definition-
to cook something,such as meat,in an oven or over a fire,or to cook in this way.

5 canoe
-context-
The Man had a canoe.
-definition-
to travel by canoe.

6 smudge
-context-
All those little smudges on the sand between the Cave and the river are the marks of
the Woman's feet and the Man's feet.
-definition-
a dirty mark.

  1. In the phrase "this befell and behappened and became" I think that the author is playing with the language. "Befell" is an unusual word and "behappened" is not a word at all, as far as I know, but I think the author made it up for fun ("befell" and "became" both start with "be" so perhaps she added "be" to "happened").

    By the way, your link to the story does not work.
